There are two ways the past can become an obstacle to having a better future. The first, is when we believe the past is so horrible that we don’t believe we will ever be able to move forward from it. There was so much pain, so much dysfunction, we may start to believe there is absolutely no hope.
The other, is the exact opposite. Sometimes, people have such a great past behind them, they think it will be impossible to trump it. They may not press forward as hard because they believe the good ol’ days are in the past. They may surmise that they should be thankful for what happened and live off of yesterday’s blessing.
It can become a stumbling block, so to speak, because they may not ever think anything that wonderful can happen again. They judge everything in their present and their soon to be future by what they have seen in these “mighty” days. Since they don’t see God moving in the same ways, they surmise he isn’t moving as strongly. They surmise that he may not move in the way they have seen it because it doesn’t look according to their eyes like it did in the past.
And they are right. Most likely, he wants to do a new thing. God has a way of bringing us to new places. If he did everything exactly like he did it in the past, there would be no reason for us to stretch ourselves to our full capacity and trust him in the process. When he is ready, and we are ready for what he has for us, is when the greatest things are performed.
