In the story of Mary and Martha in the bible, Mary is the one who just wants to sit at Jesus’ feet and worship him all day. Martha is more focused on the tasks that need to be done, so she misses a very special time to be in the presence of Jesus. I have to admit, most of my friends have tended to be Martha’s and I constantly look at them and think, how can they naturally be like that?
I could literally stay at Jesus feet all day, have a messy room, need my car worked on, forgot to pay my bills, forgot I had a meeting, everyone calling me not knowing where I’m at- but I would be soaking me up some Jesus. But I’ve learned, my naturally tendency can become imbalanced. Also, I can never live my best life like that.
It took me a long time to realize the importance that Martha saw in the details. I started to realize, maybe there could be a blend of both of them to create a powerful lifestyle. What if I became someone that soaked up his presence and got all I could get, but when I got up I got busy being excellent with the details of my life.
I now view everything I do as worship to him. For example, when my boss is gone and I’m tempted to slack a little bit while he is gone, I try to keep working at the same pace so that I can be trusted.
I believe we can “serve” God better the more whole we become. In order to achieve that inward or spiritual wholeness, great habits are necessary. Great habits are necessary even to fully maximize those miracles we sought him for in our alone times.
Great habits will alleviate stress. Sometimes, we can spend so much time stressing and praying about things that could have been avoided with just a little discipline. Many times, the miracles we seek are because we were not embracing the details of our lives. So now we have to spend precious energy backtracking. We were allowing the weeds to grow up.
Habits allow us to create a solid life. One that has a great foundation. You won’t have to waste precious time at his feet trying to get back the years you lost not paying attention to the details. Instead, you can come to him and ask him how to handle the increase he has given you because you have shown him that you can be trusted.
