Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding

Proverbs 3:13

A person with wisdom helps many people. The person who has wisdom will not only be a great example with their life, but will automatically be one to give good advice to the people they brush up against. This will cause others to make good decisions that will lead to better lives. ( I am saying some earth shattering stuff right here)

My grandmother, June Starr, was the most practical woman I knew. One time I remember everyone around me giving the most spiritual advice ever, filled with a lot of God this, God that. I looked at my grandmother and she gave one of the most practical one liners ever. It didn’t seem like it was as “spiritual” as some of the other things I had heard, but it stripped stuff down in the most simple way and I knew I was hearing from a very wise woman.

My grandmother had so much grace. She knew how to handle people and look at situations in a way that would benefit her life and those around her. Don’t get me wrong she was a prayer warrior also, but she didn’t let hullabaloo get in between her walking out her life correctly.

Her mindset determined the outcome of many situations in her life that could have turned out bad into turning into something good over time. For instance, my grandmother lost her mom at a very young age. She was left alone and often felt responsibility for her siblings. She would go on to raise 5 strong daughters without ever being able to call her mom to ask for advice. She never had her mother help with her kids. Yet, I never heard her complain or talk about it. I only heard her counting her blessings that she had a wonderful family. She loved to relish the things she treasured about her life, including having her daughters sit around in a circle telling past stories and, of course, they were filled with a plenty of humor. That is probably why it seemed she had a better life than others. She was too busy magnifying what she did have and that in turn caused her to have even more, while waiting for those negative things to turn around.

She was a great leader as a pastors wife, mother, one of the first district superintendents wife, a judges wife, and the many other things she took care of for my grandpa. Her practicalness can be seen down to her 20 minute naps and her quiet time in the mornings where she could be seen with her hair neatly done with a velvet red robe and a hot cup of coffee. She took care of herself no matter how many responsibilities she had because she knew she had to. There is no way she could be all those things and not be her best self.

And her best self she was.
